Artists and Studios
-
Jim Murphy (my father, the other half of murphyarts.com):
- Impressionistic paintings of New England. Take a look at his paintings and you'll get a real sense of where I grew up, and where I love to spend my time outside of the city and my studio.
-
Stony Meadow Pottery, Jordan Taylor
- A fellow Earlham College graduate and an amazing potter. Jordan's studio and kilns are located outside of Scranton, PA. We studied clay together in college, and although our pots have taken different paths, I feel like our pots are related. Cousins perhaps.
-
Sarah C. Chapman, Jeweler and Metalsmith
- A Chicago metalsmith, and good friend. I love Sarah's work. And own lots of it (including these earrings). She has amazing craftmanship and beautiful, simple designs.
-
Julie Wight, Photographer
- Also a Chicagoan, and another good friend. Julie's photographs are stark and beautiful. Her images show a side of Chicago that is difficult to capture.
-
Nancy Pirri, Sculptor
- Soda-fired sculptures of one of my long-time students. Nancy experiments with forms and textures.
Publications
- The Studio Potter
- Each issue of this magazine is like a book, in-depth articles from many perspectives.
- Ceramics Monthly
- The best-known of clay magazines.
Beautiful images and extensive content.
- The Clay Times
- Lots of useful, practical information.
Organizations
- NCECA
- National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. Hosts the annual conference for potters, sculptors, clay teachers and students.
- CAC Chicago Artist Coalition
- The Potters Council of the American Ceramics Society
- There are lots of benefits to being a member, like discounts to Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated.
Suppliers
- Aftosa
- I use them often for ceramic accessories like oil lamp wicks, lamp parts, and plate stands. They regularly get in new products and don't charge for shipping.

- Custom made engraved stamps that you can use for your signature stamp. See an example of my stamp here.
- ClockParts.com
- Speedy service and the best selection of clock hands that I've found.
